Monthly Happy Hour Gathering 6 June (Thursday)
Dear Alumni,
Please kindly note that there will be a happy hour gathering for Ying Wa boys and friends.
Date: 6th June 2019, Thursday (6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, and beyond)
Venue: Grappa’s Cellar (Central) Basement 1, Jardine House, 1 Connaught Place, Central, Hong Kong.
Drinks arrangement: OBA Member $150 per head, Non-Member $180 per head Two drinks coupons (for house wine/beer/soft drinks with nibbles and snacks for sharing.)
This is a regular casual gathering/networking occasion for old boys of all age groups and looking forward to seeing you all on 1st Friday evening of each month. No preregistration required.

Sad News – the passing of Mr Chung Yuk Man (Old boy-1971/F5)
It is with deep sorrow to record the passing of Mr Chung Yuk Man (Old boy-1971/F5). Yuk Man served in the Executive Committee of the Association since the 1990s for over a decade, actively pioneering the sports development fund-raising activities for the Ying Wa College students and also soliciting sponsorship in the school campus relocation to Sham Shui Po.
He contributed so much to and in many ways for the Ying Wa family. He was a role model and an unsung hero at the OBA.
He will be dearly missed by us all.
His funeral will be held on 8-9 June, at the Shatin Po Fook Memorial Hall, details as per the attached obituary notice.

Last night one of our Heritage&Archive working group conveners Mr. Peter Lee share some of the interesting stories that they found during the last few years.
These includes stories of the Canton bell outside our Noble Hall, our music teacher Mr. Rupert Baldwin who brought us the “Home of Our Youth”..

【英華文物保育小組 – Ying Wa Heritage & Archives Group】I
2017年的歷史接力跑，何解起步點是中環士丹頓街(Staunton Street)? 因為英華在港的首個校舍，正是位於士丹頓街和鴨巴甸街(Aberdeen Street) 交界，即PMQ對面的地段。要體驗英華1843年“登港”後170多年的足跡，當然要從士丹頓街出發走到英華街。
一直以來，要了解士丹頓街校舍的外貌，只能靠倫敦傳道會碩果僅存的一張黑白素描…… 但明明1840年代的香港，已有不少畫家在香港謀生，還剛剛開始有商業攝影師。
校史《皕載英華》開機印刷前的10多天，幾位“唔信邪”和“唔忿氣”的校史組成員，作最後衝刺：在重整思路和有關線索後，如有神助，終於在香港藝術館一幅1846年的彩色板畫中的一個小小角落，找到士丹頓街校舍的芳蹤(只佔整個構圖的80份之1!)，趕上了出版校史的尾班車，讓大家從可另一角度一睹她昔日的風釆。
這是校史組在過去幾年的資料發掘過程中的一個小故事。最近校史組已進化為校友會的英華文物保育小組(Ying Wa Heritage & Archives Group) 。小組的召集人會在 3月21日晚上八時，分享其他有趣的歷史發現和校史編寫故事。

【英華文物保育小組 – Ying Wa Heritage & Archives Group】- II
近年有中日學者指出，英華書院從1820年代至1860年代出版印刷的中文書刊，在明治維新前期，對於渴望了解西方知識和國際形勢的日本政客及知識分子，是一個重要的渠道。當中的《遐邇貫珍》和《智環啟蒙塾課初步》，更成為日本知識分子的收藏、謄抄和翻印的對象。
有學者也提到，當年日本出使西方，在香港轉船時，也會去英華書院參觀和買書。
正所謂有圖有真相：最近文物保育小組在翻看1862年日本出使歐洲的記錄時發現，除了內文有提到團員訪問英華，在描繪港島北岸景物的“香港之圖” 中，也標示了英華書院士丹頓街校舍的大概位置，作為以後訪港日人的重要地標。
文久元年(1862)日本遣歐使節團大概有40人，團員包括明治維新主力，一萬Yen紙幣的“主角”福澤諭吉。有興趣細讀原文，可到日本國立國會圖書館的網站，找《歐西紀行 · 卷之三》（高島祐啓著）。
